Exceeding Expectations.....Mitsubishi Pajero

Every now and then, car manufacturers come up with variants or models that make us wonder "what on earth were they thinking of when they made it?" The 3.8L V6 Pajero Exceed is one of them. Before we explain why, let us have a look at the Pajero's history, and how it fares in terms of appearance, performance and practicality.
The Pajero has been one of the most popular names when it comes to SUVs in Malaysia for a very long time, alongside the Land Rover Defender and the Toyota Land Cruiser, due to its reputation for being durable and almost indestructable.
It was the first generation Pajero LO49 that deserves all credits for the success. Introduced back in the 1980s, hundreds of units are still running without much hassle nationwide.
Mitsubishi did a good job with the second generation Pajero too, as it was just as good as its older sibling. Having been around for almost 20 years now, we have to admit that the second generation Pajero does not look old at all.
Sadly, the Pajero's presence got weaker after the second generation. Although Mitsubishi brought the name back to life through the Triton based Pajero Sport, it is still not as tough as what a real Pajero is supposed to be.
However, it was not the end of the road for heavy duty SUV afficionados as Mitsubishi finally introduced the real Pajero in 2010.
In terms of appearance, the Pajero Exceed has a very strong presence. The huge chromed grille, large headlights and menacing front fascia send cars running for cover as it approaches them from behind on highways.
Its ride height shows that this vehicle was made to tackle the roughest of conditions like logging trail, village roads and muddy terrains.
Although made to withstand rough conditions, the Pajero Exceed looks classy too, thanks to the white paint job, chromed side-mirror and door handles as well as the wheel design.
Inside, things are kept simple but level of comfort has not been compromised. Electric leather seats provide very good support and ride height. In fact, driving this thing gives a sense of confidence and superiority.
In the rear, the Pajero Exceed is generous with head and leg space. Even lanky individuals can sit comfortably during long distance journeys. Third row is slightly less roomy, but is decent compared with many SUVs in the market.
With second and third row seats folded, luggage space stands at 1,758 litres, enough to fit a small cow in it.
With so much space, comfortable seats and low NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) level, the Pajero Exceed is a very good vehicle to pick up your buddies or family members for a road trip.
Performance wise, the Pajero Exceed is a monster. Power is supplied by a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine which produces 247hp and 329Nm of maximum torque from 2,800rpm itself.
Believe it or not, the Pajero Exceed is capable of going past 180km/h with ease.
In terms of offroad abilities, the Pajero Exceed’s 37 degrees approach angle, 25 degrees departure angle, ground clearance of 225mm and the low-end torque makes it a vicious offroader.
As powerful as it is, it is the 3.8-liter V6 petrol engine that made us wonder what Mitsubishi was thinking when it made this monster, because it is just as thirsty for fuel.
We feel that a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine would be able to provide similar amount of power and most importantly, do more justice to the pockets of the owners.
Besides that, the Pajero Exceed is a great vehicle overall with great off-road abilities, impressive comfort level, massive power, and a menacing presence.
