The model, previously codenamed T73, is Peugeot’s latest model in the C-segment market and promises to set a new class benchmark for performance, space, elegance and safety.
The 408 will be available in two variants with one version fitted with an enhanced fuel-efficient engine that is said to be the most powerful in its segment.
“The Peugeot 408 is locally-assembled at Naza Automotive Manufacturing in Gurun, Kedah and is ready to be launched for the Malaysian and regional markets.
“We are targeting to produce 60,000 units of the 408 over a five-year period beginning this year and we plan to export 60% of that total to markets in the region,” said Naza Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin.
He said Peugeot distributors from Australia, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Brunei, the Philippines and Bangladesh had visited the factory to get a closer look and test drive the new 408 last week.
“The distributors were impressed and excited over the 408 and will soon place orders to launch the Malaysian-made 408 in their respective countries in coming months,” said SM Nasarudin.
The 408 is an international model by Peugeot that is aimed at growing the French carmaker’s global sales volume. Last year, Peugeot sold 81,000 units of the 408.
Datuk Samson Anand George, chief operating officer Nasim which is the local distributor of Peugeot cars, said the 408 would contribute significantly to the company’s sales target of 9,300 units this year, which would represent a 72% jump from its sales in 2011.
He said the 408 would come with Nasim’s recently introduced five-year warranty with unlimited mileage.
Together with Nasim’s existing lifetime 24-hours Peugeot Assistance service and its exclusive Peugeot Privilege membership, he said the company aims to provide the best ownership experience for customers.
