It is a five-door hatchback that promises agility in a comfortable package.
The car made its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2010, Alfa Romeo’s Centenary year, and was a tribute to an Alfa Romeo legend.
It has earned a Euro NCAP five-star rating, making it one of the safest hatchbacks in the world.
The front displays a new interpretation of the classic shield, embedded in the front bumper and suspended between the air vents. This is the starting point for the design of the entire car. The headlights include LED daytime running lights as is the trend nowadays.
Viewed from the side, the Giulietta gives the impression of an agile and sturdy car, and this is attributed to side windows which emulate the coupé form, enhanced by the hidden rear door handles.
The ribs on the sides of the vehicle gives the impression of an elongated car, while clean lines at the rear accentuate the angular shape of the body.
The rear, like the front and side, features styling which emphasises the car’s muscular stance. The rear lights also sport LED technology. The car comes with a 350-litre boot space.
The new Giulietta introduces an entirely new platform, named Compact, which was designed to satisfy the most demanding customers in terms of road-holding, agility and safety.
To achieve such multi-faceted goals, Alfa Romeo refined the suspension, fitted a new steering system, used a light and rigid structure of aluminium and high-strength steels, and advanced manufacturing techniques.
The Alfa DNA selector allows three driving modes – Dynamic, Normal and All Weather - which customises the vehicle's behaviour to suit different road conditions and driving styles.
Alfa Romeo said the award-winning Multiair petrol engine blends performance with the lowest emissions and fuel consumption levels in its class.
The Giulietta's 1.4-litre turbocharged engine produces 170hp and 250Nm of torque.
Its top speed is 218kph, and the car is able to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 7.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is a lowly 5.2 litres/100km over the combined cycle.
Power is relayed to the wheels via a six-speed Twin Clutch Transmission.
Premium features in the new Giulietta include adaptive bi-xenon lights, leather seats, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, radio/mobile phone controls on steering wheel, Start/Stop system, rear parking sensors, rain-dusk-humidity sensors, electrically folding door mirrors and an electrochromic rear-view mirror.
Key safety technologies are ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, traction and stability control as well as hydraulic brake asssistance and hill-hold control.
Priced at RM178,888 (excluding road tax and insurance), the new model is available in white, red or black.
Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd managing director Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman said at the launch on Friday the car was aimed at the lifestyle group and roadshows and events would be organised in the next two months to promote the car and the brand, which has been wallowing in the doldrums for some time now.
Since the latter relocated to a better address along the Federal Highway, the Alfa Romeo centre has been relegated to the Sime Darby Auto ConneXion outlet in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, where it is sharing showroom space with Land Rover and Ford models.
But this is an interim measure as Auto Italia is working closely with the principal to bring in more variants and models to revitalise the brand and justify the establishment of a local 3S centre for Alfa Romeo.
According to Mohd Hazem, Auto Italia is planning to bring in performance variants of the MiTo and Giulietta in the near term subject to hot climate testing results by Alfa Romeo.
The new Giulietta variant is likely to be introduced locally in the second half of this year followed by the new MiTo variant, he added.
