At RM99,888 (excluding registration and insurance), this makes the model the cheapest and most affordable VW in the local market.
It is being distributed by Volkswagen Passengers Cars Malaysia, a newly formed subsidiary of Volkswagen Group Malaysia that started operations on March 1 this year.
The Polo Sedan is equipped with a 1.6-litre 103bhp petrol injection 16-Valve Multi Point Injection engine. The powerplant is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is offered with a Tiptronic option.
The engine produces 153Nm of torque, allowing the car to sprint from 0 to 100kph in 12.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 183kph. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.5 litres/100km.
The Polo Sedan features clean lines that's typical of a Volkswagen. The car comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, chrome finish on the front grille and on the front air-dam, trunk and fog light surrounds with height adjustable halogen headlights, and green-tinted heat absorbing glass.
Inside the cabin is an interior chrome package (chrome surrounds for light switches, AC vents, steering wheel accent, handbrake lever knob and gearshift), instrument cluster with tachometer, speedometer, trip odometer and digital clock, leather-wrapped steering wheel, gearshift knob, handbrake lever and gearshift boot.
It comes with four one-touch powered windows, height adjustable driver and passenger seat, ‘Metric’ fabric seat upholstery, multi-function display, power door locks, power steering, radio with CD-MP3/WMA player and four speakers and rear doors with storage compartments.
The car is also fitted with four airbags - driver and front passenger with two side airbags), 3-point safety belts for rear outboard occupants, lap belt for rear middle occupant, electronic anti-theft immobiliser, electronic Brake Pressure Distribution (EBD) and pinch guard safety for all four powered windows.
Six body colours are available: Candy White, Flash Red, Terra Beige, Shadow Blue, Reflex Silver and Deep Black.
The cars that were driven during a media preview on Friday following the Polo Sedan launch here are currently imported from VW's plant in India and it is likely that it would be locally assembled soon.
If so, this would make it the third model slated for Malaysian assembly, with the Passat Sedan already in local production while Jetta's turn is coming.
In an interview with Star Rev (the print companion of star-motoring.com) last October, Volkswagen Group Malaysia managing director Ricky Tay had revealed that the company would go all out to widen its offerings of more competitively priced imported and locally assembled models.
He had said Volkswagen would offer at least one model that was affordable to the ordinary Joe. The entry of the sub-RM100K Polo Sedan appeared to fulfil its objective.
Volkswagen Passengers Cars Malaysia was formed to take charge of the Volkswagen passenger cars business in Malaysia. It also handles the sporty R versions of the Golf, Passat CC and Scirocco.
